Discussion Questions and Assignments

These are sample discussion questions and assignments that would likely be appropriate for use with any documentary film.

These questions could be used as merely a starting point for a discussion.  Educators/group leaders may wish to prepare their own questions specific to each film/group.  Please also note that the host websites where these films are located (Netflix, DVD.Netflix, Snagfilms, etc.) already contain a tremendous number of viewer comments that can provide good ideas/value for your discussions as well.  Then let the conversations between you and your group’s members follow their own natural, and hopefully enjoyable/thought-provoking, paths.

Subject Matter

  • Did the film cause you to think about some aspect of the world in a new way or to understand something more thoroughly than before?
  • Did the film change your mind about any aspect of the subject that it presents?
  • What did you like the most/least about the film? Why?

Film Technique

  • Describe the progression of the film: how it begins, what stages it passes through, and how it concludes.  Was there a “structure”?
  • Describe any cinematic techniques used in the film overall or in particular scenes that you found to be particularly effective.
  • If the filmmakers were to ask you how the film could be improved, what would you tell them?  Describe the changes you would suggest in detail and the reasons for your suggestions.

Assignments

Viewers may wish to further research and write about the people, places and issues touched upon in the film.  Allow the film to have been your “window” to a particular topic/issue.  Now, seek out articles/books, people to interview, etc. to learn more.  Prepare a written or spoken report to share with the rest of your group.

Take Action

Based on what you’ve learned in the (these) film(s) and from any further research you may have undertaken, can you think of ways you might want to modify your personal values and how you speak to and/or behave towards other people?
